Western Lab – Roanoke
The Western Laboratory employs a staff of about 60 to provide the following services:
- Controlled Substances
- Firearms & Toolmarks
- Forensic Biology
- Latent Prints & Impressions
- Toxicology
- Trace Evidence
The Western Laboratory is located in the picturesque Roanoke Valley, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains close to the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The original laboratory building was completed in 1995 and is shared with the Western District Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. On February 24, 2014, the laboratory began an expansion and renovation project, which was completed in the fall of 2016.

On Monday, September 26, 2016, the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Western Laboratory Expansion/Renovation was held in Roanoke. The ceremony celebrated the official opening of the renovated and expanded DFS Western Laboratory and Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Western District.
