Celebrating Excellence in Forensic Science: 117th Virginia Forensic Science Academy Graduation

On June 12, 2026, the Virginia Department of Forensic Science proudly celebrated the graduation of the 117th Session of the Virginia Forensic Science Academy at its new facility in Mechanicsville, Virginia. Twelve dedicated law enforcement professionals from across the Commonwealth successfully completed the Academy’s rigorous nine-week training program.

Building Expertise Through Hands-On Training

The Virginia Forensic Science Academy is designed for sworn and civilian criminal justice personnel whose responsibilities include the collection and preservation of physical evidence. Through intensive classroom instruction, practical exercises, and simulated crime scene investigations, students develop the skills necessary to properly recognize, document, collect, preserve, and submit physical evidence for forensic laboratory examination.

A Comprehensive Forensic Science Curriculum

The Academy’s curriculum provides students with a broad foundation in forensic science and crime scene investigation. Instruction includes crime scene investigation, forensic biology, latent print examination, toxicology, arson evidence, firearms and bullet trajectory analysis, trace evidence, toolmarks, crime scene photography, evidence law, impression evidence, drug recognition, criminal investigative analysis, and crime scene sketching.

Students are evaluated through written examinations, practical exercises, homework assignments, and overall class performance to ensure they are prepared to apply forensic best practices in the field.

Public Safety Leaders Commend Academy Graduates

The keynote address was delivered by The Honorable Stanley M. Meador, Virginia Secretary of Public Safety & Homeland Security. Graduation exercises were led by Chief Deputy Director Amy Jenkins, with remarks from Virginia Department of Forensic Science Director Linda Jackson. Metro Transit Police Department Crime Scene Investigator Kayla D. Irizarry provided the student response.

Graduates leave the Academy with expanded expertise in crime scene processing, evidence recovery, and the many forensic disciplines that support thorough and accurate criminal investigations. The Virginia Forensic Science Academy continues to play a vital role in strengthening the Commonwealth’s criminal justice system by equipping law enforcement professionals with advanced forensic knowledge and practical investigative skills.

The training received during this intensive program enables graduates to maximize the use of forensic science resources in service to their agencies, their communities, and the pursuit of justice.
